Ahmed Ben Yessef (Moroccan, born 1945) is a leading figure of the post-independence generation of Moroccan artists who helped define the country’s modern artistic identity. Born in Tétouan, he received formal artistic training and later continued his education in Spain, where he established a long-term base for his practice. Working between Morocco and Spain, Ben Yessef developed a visual language shaped by both North African cultural traditions and European modernist influences. His multidisciplinary practice includes engraving, drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpture, with printmaking occupying a central and enduring role.

Over the course of his career, Ben Yessef has exhibited extensively in Morocco, Spain, and internationally, participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries, cultural institutions, and museums. His work is held in public and private collections, including regional museums and cultural foundations, where it is recognized for its technical precision, introspective character, and humanist sensibility. These sustained exhibition and collection histories affirm his position as an established and respected artist within contemporary Moroccan art, whose work continues to engage themes of memory, identity, and quiet reflection.

Contemplation (1976), an engraving, exemplifies Ben Yessef’s mastery of line and his commitment to expressive restraint. The solitary seated figure, rendered with economical yet deliberate mark-making, conveys a sense of inward focus and emotional gravity. The sparse composition and emphasis on gesture and posture allow the psychological presence of the subject to emerge without narrative excess. Through this measured approach, Ben Yessef transforms a simple moment of pause into a universal meditation on thought, solitude, and human experience, reflecting the contemplative spirit that runs consistently through his graphic work.
