Vicente Gandía (SP 1936–2006)

Vicente Gandía (Spanish, 1936–2006) was a prominent modern Spanish artist closely associated with postwar abstraction and the Mediterranean avant-garde. Born in Valencia, he trained at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos, where he developed a strong foundation in drawing and composition before moving decisively toward abstraction. Gandía belonged to a generation of artists who helped redefine Spanish art in the mid-20th century, engaging with international modernist ideas while maintaining a strong sense of regional identity rooted in light, structure, and atmosphere.

Gandía’s work is characterized by structured abstraction, subtle geometry, and a refined, restrained use of color. Whether working in painting or printmaking, he often drew inspiration from landscape, architecture, and still-life forms, not as literal subjects but as points of departure for exploring rhythm, balance, and spatial harmony. His aquatints, including La Granadas, reflect this approach through layered tonal fields, softened contours, and a quiet tension between form and surface.
