Fred Samuelson (1925–2015) was an American modernist painter known for his abstract and semi-abstract works that emphasized structure, rhythm, and the expressive potential of color. Working primarily in the mid-to-late twentieth century, Samuelson was influenced by the language of modern abstraction, often drawing on architectural and landscape references without committing to literal representation. His paintings focus on emotional resonance and material presence, using surface and gesture as central elements of meaning.

This oil painting in the orinigal frame exemplifies Samuelson’s mature approach to abstraction. A commanding vertical form anchors the composition, built from dense, gestural layers of paint. Dominant reds and warm ochres are softened by pale creams, pinks, and subtle grays, creating a sense of balance between intensity and restraint. The work suggests structure and mass without resolving into a recognizable image, allowing the viewer to respond intuitively rather than descriptively.

The surface is richly worked, with scraped and re-layered passages that reveal traces of earlier decisions beneath the final image. This visible process lends the painting depth and movement, reinforcing a dialogue between control and spontaneity. Through its textured surface and carefully modulated palette, the work reflects Samuelson’s interest in form as an emotional and spatial experience rather than a purely visual one.
